Hunkering Down in Hilton Head

BNKJ's fearless fishermen Chris Clayton, Ross Mackenzie, and Kevin Hendren recently returned from their annual fishing trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina, joined by good friend Brock Patterson of US Trust.

Unlike last year, the weather fully cooperated, as did the fish!! Captain Kent Bird of Megabite Fishing Charters helped guide our group to land a bunch of redfish and gorgeous speckled trout.

The proof is in the pics-- take a look at these beauties by our proud fishermen!!

Kevin took no prisoners on this trip!
Go get 'em, Kev!

Brock shows his catch with pride, and Captain, Chris and Ross
all want a pic with this winning fish!

Deep discussion between fish...

Trout Action on the Hooch

BNKJ's own mastermind fisherman Kevin Hendren caught this nice brown trout on a recent float trip with Chris Scalley, Guide with River Through Atlanta.

Kevin RAVES about Chris and the RTA Guides-- says they can really "hook you up with some fish." Give Kevin a shout if you need RTA's number to book a trip.

The brown hit a streamer hard.  Nymphs also worked well.

Catching Red in Orange...

Scott Taylor with Compass Marketing Research shared these great redfish photos from his recent trip to Orange Beach, Alabama.

These beauties -- caught in Perdido Pass with medium/light spinning using bull minnows as bait -- were more than 35 pounds each!

Scott and his fishing buddy caught and released four bull reds and then kept four of the 26-inch redfish for family dinner that night. Bon Appétit!

Fishing Success in Beautiful Belize

Our good friend Greg Esslinger (FTI Consulting) just came home from a successful fishing trip in Ambergris Caye, Belize with this beautiful 100 pound Tarpon!  No wonder Greg has decided to make this trip an annual tradition!

Tackle for this beauty was a 12 weight fly rod with a 20#
Ouclass tippet and a black and red tarpon toad fly.
She took two hours to boat
once she was hooked!

We don't know this guy but WOW what a fish story!

Anthony Wichman of Kauai made Hawaii and national headlines today when he was pulled into the water this morning by what he later learned was a 230 pound Ahi Tuna!

After being pulled under by the great fish an estimated 50 feet into the sea, Anthony somehow survived to tell the story, and Anthony's 14-foot Livingston boat was rescued by the Coast Guard as well.

The Ahi Tuna, sadly, did not survive the incident but sold at the fish market for $1400 so good news for Anthony's fish-loving friends!

Watch this!

All we can say is Wow!

Snook Fest 2013

I just got back from three days of fly fishing the mangrove swamps in Naples, Florida.  Although you can catch tarpon, jacks, mackerel, snapper, etc., the snook were out in force on this trip.  I caught a bunch, all on topwater poppers and small streamer patterns.  Since the wind was not a problem, I was able to use six-weight tackle the entire time.  As usual, my guide was Capt. Bob Marvin.  Bob is a great guide and will put you on some fish!  To book a trip, call him at (239) 877-9162.

Yours truly and a nice snook.

Nothing like a relaxing day of fishing...

Peace, quiet, beautiful setting...

Always nice to catch a fish or two, right Chris?

Kevin also reels one in and shows us his catch!

DRUMroll please.... Robert Charles has his BIGGEST black drum catch yet!

Congratulations Robert Charles! You might have only hooked one fish last weekend in Florida during that rainy, bitter weather but what a doozy indeed!

Robert caught a 30+ pound black drum-- the biggest black drum he had EVER caught -- using 20 pound braid with a 20 pound mono leader. The bait that did the trick? BLUE CRAB!

It took 10 minutes for Robert to haul this big one into the boat, only to release it after getting this beautiful shot to prove his success that day. No way to stay dry on THAT boat ride, Robert, but maybe it's the wet bird that catches the worm!

Fishing for Sailfish in the Florida Keys

Our good friend Tim Ramsey had the good fortune last month of fishing in Islamorada, a "Village of Islands" in Monroe County, Florida. He and his wife/fishing companion Betsy enjoyed the perfect weather for fishing in January in the Keys-- highs in the low 60s, mixed clouds and a pleasant breeze.

Betsy and Tim took some beautiful pictures which captured the magnificent views, red sunrises, mixed clouds, a little salt water spray and magic of the trip!

The Reel McCoy, perfect for easy access and quick exits!

Alligator Lighthouse, marking Alligator Reef about a mile
from the harbor where the water is about 25 feet deep.

Bud & Mary's

Beautiful catch! Sailfish are members of the
billfish family.  They typically are 5 to 11 feet,
weighing 120 to 220 pounds. They are distinguished from
the well known marlin by their full size dorsal fin
which runs nearly the length of their body.
They are not widely eaten and are not endangered
but make great game fish.

Happy New Year, and what better way to end 2012!!

Our buddy Brian Corbett with CCG Advisors recently went fishing with his 15 year old son Connor on NEW YEAR'S EVE and landed this beautiful over-limit 29 inch REDFISH. This is such a classic that we are showing this catch in BLACK AND WHITE!

This gorgeous fish was caught on board The Angler's Mark boat on the backwaters off the inter-coastal waterway of Amelia Island, Florida.

Captain Lawrence Piper guided the Corbett men well, encouraging Connor to use what those from Louisiana call a Cockaho minnow as bait. It worked, and Connor was able to hook that beauty and land the GREAT FISH by himself on a light tackle spinning rod!

MMMMM...... blackened redfish and champagne-- perfect for a New Year's Eve feast!

Happy New Year everybody-- can't wait to see what we all catch in 2013! Make it a big one and send us your best shots!
